Adults and children facing cancer will have access to more advanced treatment options close to home as the AdventHealth Cancer Institute introduces proton therapy. The MEVION S250-FIT™ Proton Therapy System will expand the care available to Central Floridians.
AdventHealth Cancer Institute brings together cancer specialists, advanced treatments, clinical research and services that support patients’ physical, emotional and spiritual needs. Its new facility on the AdventHealth Orlando campus will expand access to care tailored to specific cancer types, early-phase clinical trials and advanced surgical and treatment capabilities. Multidisciplinary teams and support services will help patients and families navigate care close to home. The institute diagnoses more cancer cases than any other health system in Florida.
Engineered for installation within a standard linear accelerator (LINAC) vault, the MEVION S250-FIT™ platform enables proton therapy to become an integral part of the AdventHealth Cancer Institute’s new Orlando facility alongside medical, surgical and supportive oncology.
The platform combines HYPERSCAN® pencil beam scanning with Leo Cancer Care’s Marie® 360-degree upright patient positioning system with integrated CT imaging and RaySearch Laboratories’ RayStation® treatment planning system to provide a comprehensive proton therapy solution for adult and pediatric cancer indications. Designed to support the full scope of a modern proton therapy program, the MEVION S250-FIT enables institutions to bring advanced proton therapy into an integrated radiation oncology environment. Proton therapy concentrates radiation at a planned depth, helping reduce exposure to healthy tissue beyond the tumor. This capability is particularly important in pediatric oncology, where protecting developing organs and healthy tissue is a central consideration in treatment planning and long-term care.
“Every day, we meet patients at one of the most vulnerable moments of their lives, and it is our responsibility to bring together both clinical expertise and compassionate whole person care,” said Dr. Mark Socinski, executive medical director of the AdventHealth Cancer Institute. “Bringing this advanced proton therapy platform to our cancer program will expand treatment options for adults and children while surrounding them with the specialists and support they need throughout their journey. By offering advanced proton therapy close to home, we help keep each patient’s care connected, coordinated and close to the people who matter most.”
This selection adds to the growing adoption of Mevion’s latest-generation platform among leading academic and regional cancer programs. With the platform already in clinical use and additional deployments announced, upright proton therapy is bringing a new approach to integrating advanced radiation treatment within comprehensive cancer care.
“AdventHealth is making a significant investment in the future of cancer care, and its selection of the MEVION S250-FIT adds to the momentum behind our latest-generation platform,” said Tina Yu, Ph.D., President and CEO of Mevion Medical Systems. “We engineered this system to change how health systems bring proton therapy to their patients. Its compact upright architecture brings precision proton delivery and integrated imaging into a platform designed for a standard radiation therapy vault. AdventHealth is putting that capability at the heart of its new flagship cancer center, advancing our shared ambition to expand access for adults and children.”
The new AdventHealth Cancer Institute facility is scheduled to open in 2028.
